There used to be rumors of a ''Flat Rock monster'' that inhabited the bottoms along the nearby Flat Rock River, that let out a deep, mournful wail on hot summer nights, waking up people in town. The sound was actually generated by a device invented and used by the local Nading brothers, Martin, Karl, Jack and Don (who were great pranksters when under the influence), from 1920s-40s, and heard as late as 1960.
